The lovely Corinth at Eorzeapedia has recently posted an article giving us the low down of weekly news posted from Japanese gaming magazines and websites, and has even broken down the differences English readers may receive versus our Japanese counterparts. The entire article is a great read but what may be most interesting to craft-o-holics is that their journey as a crafter might be more involved than knowing a recipe, having a crystal, ingredients, and (depending on what you believe or don’t) what direction you are facing.
As someone who has always been interested in crafting but was frustrated with how boring it was in MMOs, FFXIV’s crafting system looks promising with the need to use the right equipment or tools in order to produce a result. For Culinarians especially, they will not only need to worry about procuring the correct ingredients but make sure that their food wares are fresh and most likely priced to sell well against competitors! Because who would want to eat moldy creampuffs or spoiled meat? I am personally excited to see a “Marked Down for Quick Sale!” stand of food that is about to expire within a few hours of going on sale.
With Culinarians always needing to make food, Blacksmiths being able to repair weapons, and all crafters making sure that their tools of trade are at their best, FFXIV is certainly looking promising to those who not only love crafting but to those like myself who may have been put off by how crafting was handled in other MMOs.

Very interesting. I’m glad they’re trying to do something with taverns. DDO tried to make taverns a player hub, but generally failed because there wasn’t much to do in them and they were instanced; but i always thought the idea had merit. If they make it not just a hang out hub, but also a place you can sell trash items and things, then it just might work.
The line about having multiple markets intrigues me. Ever since the last update, where they mentioned the character going to the meat alley, has me thinking that maybe you can only sell certain things in certain markets. Like there might be an armor makers row, the prepared food row, raw food ingredients row, etc. I’m not sure an idea like this would really take off (It would annoy a lot of people) but damn it would be immersive.
“Marked Down for Quick Sale!”
Great, a bigger excuse to undercut.
William, yeah I was thinking that. But if the food is going to spoil, the player makes that decision if they wish to buy it. Either way, I think the markets are going to be competitive with varying results on synthesis with all the settings in place.
Not quite kitchen talk, but decent speculation none the less. I was reading in the bestiary, and in regards to the Aldgoat it states “While the aldgoat is young and tender and fair of disposition, he may yet be made tame and obedient.”
Possibly a hint at a rancher/shepherd/herder or something of the sort? If so would there be a butcher and skinner too? Too much blood and not enough answers.
WOW, it’s amazing that you come across when you read things… under Blacksmith it also mentions Gunsmith! However, on a completely different note, has anyone else noticed the high number of typos and poor “Old English” or have I revised to many papers lately?
Esarisu, you said to when you meant too.
Hey! I read about this stuff on FFXIVBase also. Great information keep the blog posts coming.
What would’ve been neat in FFXI would’ve been the ability to set up shop at the entrance to dunes with a bakery stand or something. Trade your lizard eggs for a donut (which has some stats or something). Player made of course.
