• FFXIV Tactics: Understanding the Fatigue System

Just recently, the people over at ffxivtactics.com have released a very well made video explaining the Fatigue System in Final Fantasy XIV. A divisive topic as of late, misinformation, as well as the lack of information about the Fatigue System, is responsible for alarming many in the community. This has even caused some to declare that they'd cancel their preorders, and have turned others off to the idea of playing the game altogether. Fortunately this is not the case for everyone. If you're worried about the Fatigue System, this video goes a long way towards explaining exactly what it is, so that players can make a well informed decision about how it will affect their game time. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME stuff ffxivtactics team! For the most part I had this system understood since they officially release the information, but this video makes it crystalline. Spot on ffxivtactics team, and FFXIVBlog team for creating and posting this video respectively and standing up against the hogwash uninformed people are posting across the web!

Very good job on this video, FFXIVTactics! This is a great way to explain the fatigue system to newcomers without the typical knee-jerk 'OMG XP LIMIT' reaction that has been so typical. It's professional, detailed, and not sensationalist or condescending.

      Two thumbs up! :3

I feel like I just watched an infomercial for some sort for some start-up company.

Terrific video! I'm sure that will help so many disgruntled people. I think the key of it all is the ability to combine abilities to use across different jobs.

I noticed this last night when I changed discipline for the first time from Lancer to Archer and maintained the ability 'Skewer'.
At first I was annoyed that it didn't remove itself from the action bar, but once I tried it and it worked the words "This is *&$king awesome!" flew from my mouth.
I had no idea that you kept abilities like that!

Like the video said, this is kind of revolutionary and is going to make leveling much more interesting! Two thumbs up from me! d\(^.^)/b

Great video and definitely helps to understand the system better. Yeah, the style reminds me of Team Fortress 2 in terms of graphics choice which is kinda cool.

I'm sorry but this seems more like the worst of both worlds to me. I really love FFXI and put a lot of my life into it - I really want FFXIV to succeed. The creators of this video did a wonderful job with it - but to me it is lipstick on a pig. Sorry to sound like that.

First off, fatigue mechanics are not new or revolutionary - pay-by-the-minute MUDs such as Gemstone back in the late 80's early 90's had a fatigue system where players needed to sit around town after earning enough xp to "absorb" what they had learned.

So from what I'm seeing in this video instead of only 1 or two subjobs a person needs to level (a la FFXI) in order to reach optimal effectiveness with their character, potentially they now need to skill up 3 or 4 different jobs to obtain the skills necessary to be socially acceptable (or whatever passes for that in MMOs) with their primary job.

And on top of that is the fatigue system limiting physical level progression - which I still feel is more of an attempt to address limited content with the initial release than anything else. The current "system" with FFXI that offers xp bonus rings that have limited charges every week is more of a "glass half full" approach to the issue, and no one complains about that. But making it such that a "hardcore" gamer (aka casual with real life) no matter what they do they cannot make even one iota of progression with their physical level for DAYS... and then the "casual "gamer" (hardcore with real life) must now put in effort to skill across multiple jobs or risk being "gimp" - in my opinion this is just disastrous and tone deaf design.

I believe what they mean by new and revolutionary is capped withing the last ten years of MMORPG's, within being mainstreamed to millions of players around the world.
From what I recall in FFXI, having one 75 job with a couple subs was gimped. "RDM/DRK...oh you don't have DRK sub?....no you can't come." It all depends on what you want to do and with the release of a new MMO I think there would be a lot to do besides trying to grind to cap asap. Hopefully grinding somewhat goes away.
I agree there is probably a lack of content at release. However, I wouldn't expect there to be that much endgame. Hopefully SE did not have to rush as much as some of the community keeps mentioning. I feel that developers of an MMO would have to wait and see what direction the community is going in, see if it is the one they thought it might have.
Even after I continuously blamed SE for so many things in FFXI, I feel that I want to give them the benefit of the doubt with this one. I'll understand if the game is not perfect at release. I actually don't expect it to be. FFXI wasn't....A lot has changed in that game to make it what it is now (amazingly too easy). I do think you should give the game a chance before cutting its system down while in beta. And yes....I am totally ready to regret typing this in a month!

      Cheers ^^

I'm certainly glad they've come out with this video, cause to be quite frank, when I first heard of the fatigue system I was so turned off about the game. Now that the system's been described in detail though, it makes a lot more sense, and I can rest a lot easier knowing that we won't be as badly crippled as some sources would lead us to believe.
