• the Winddown: What surprised you?

Now that we are a little more than a week into the open beta, it is only natural that impressions are being formed for those traversing the lands of Eorzea either for the first time or in its extended glory towards the lands of Ul'dah and Gridania. If you are in open beta, tell us of what has surprised you about Final Fantasy XIV that you never thought possible!

As for myself, I know people following me on twitter or listening to me ramble elsewhere has often heard me praise Puglist. This may sound crazy to some, but I have never been a huge hand-to-hand fan. Yet something about punching your opponent's face (or knee) in with some awesome crits is just phenomenal! Especially when you're a pink haired munchkin. There is definitely more to this game that has tickled my fancy and definitely surprise me-- you'll just have to wait for Orz Cast episode three to find out what it is!

When running on my High end PC just how amazing the world looked. Playing with my wife in Gridania and having her remark on the area, the water, and how she just wanted to keep exploring. Finding High level mobs which makes the game seem so much more real. (I never figured out why all the high level mobs where so far away, from a gameplay perspective made since, but in reality they would settle in this area too)

To finish my thought, the high level mobs so close to the city, a little bit of a run, but you can find them. :)

Juli got owned by some Drakes outside of Ul'dah 5K damage anyone? It was awesome.

The world looks amazing! I'm having to run the game with settings turned down since the game is really intensive on my system. It was a pleasant surprise when i finally tried out fishing as well as the other gathering jobs. It wasn't the boring mining or gathering from other games and required you to actively take part in the action.

Combat was very different from what I was use to and still trying to learn the ins and outs of the system.

so yeah one thing i wont miss from ffxi is running for miles after picking a fight with something i cant kill and not ever getting away from them unless i zoned.
of course this game doesnt have zone points but when that mob stopped following me and left i was pretty damn surprised.

Wait. What?! They stop chasing you?! Since when? In Closed Beta I was chased by a Roseling from where ever the hell I was all the way to Camp Bearded Rock... where it killed me. In OBT, I haven't even tried running away because I assumed it wouldn't work. Thanks for the update!

For me, it's really been the fact that I had so much fun being a miner >_> Gathering skills in mmos were always something mindless and I was wondering how SE was gonna make something worthy of having its own class. Even though I don't consider their take on the idea to be perfect and there are some things I would've done differently for sure, I AM surprised that they did this well with the whole crafting class concept. Looking forward to being a level 99 miner with no other classes leveled :p

The only monsters that do not stop chasing you are the ones from Guildleves. All other aggro mobs will stop chasing you after some time.

ah. the game is fantastic in gfx
as for the start for the game. well u have to learn by trying everything out.
crafting is awkward tho. you fail alot at first but it comes around when u get the hang of it.
as for the communication between players. i havnt had alot of that in open beta.

I had to turn the settings down as well and it still looks amazing. I think the combat is really fun and even the crafting, I never really liked crafting it was alway part of the game you just had to do if you did not want to pay a arm and leg for endgame items.

A few things I dont like is the targeting party members in combat, tabing to get to the target I want SUCKS. Pepole like to move and dance around so your never spot on, and if ppl cross your screen in the back well you just missed your mark. I have been a healer for so long it feels like its a part of who I am and when I cant target a person before they need a heal then I feel like Im letting the group and myself down.

I hope they really work out this bazaar setup I spent 40 min the other night looking for a shield only to learn I could have saved the time grind the 43k I needed to get 1 from a vendor. Just think back to spending 20 or 30 mins looking for a good deal in ffxi well that time line is way below average now.

I love SE and just about every thing FF so dont take it the wrong way its just I am praying they have fixed these little things on 9-22.

I played in the closed beta and there was so much I didn't understand about what I was doing and how the game is supposed to work. I gained all my levels on my own which was incredibly boring and didn't see any parties around or groups killing enemies. Even after getting level 20 on my archer rank it didn't seem to change. I'm hoping there's more things you can do with other people because the idea of spending such a horrid ammount of time leveling up on my own isn't appealing to me. Still looking forward to seeing what the game's strengths will be when the game comes out and can try things out.

I played open beta and seeing monsters just literally stare at you from behind up close was pretty surprising. I was fighting Marmots just outside Gridania when a young galago just started following me.. staring me down. at first I thought it was an aggressive monster and have started running around my pt member, he was looking at me, perplexed thinking if he should touch the red aura monster following me. We had a laugh once we noticed the galago just following and watching.

This type of minor details added into the mix makes for a pretty interesting game.
